What Is Forward Head Posture?

Forward Head Posture is a postural alignment pattern in which the head rests in front of the shoulders instead of stacking comfortably over the upper body. The position increases demand on the neck and upper back during standing, sitting, or movement. Forward head posture may develop with sustained screen use, habit, or changes in spinal alignment.

Key Takeaways About Forward Head Posture

  • The head sits ahead of the shoulder line.
  • Screen habits and sustained positions may reinforce the pattern.
  • Forward head posture is not the same as kyphosis.

How Forward Head Posture Works

Forward Head Posture changes the relationship between the head, neck, shoulders, and upper back. The head may shift ahead during relaxed standing or while working at a screen. Neck muscles and nearby tissues then manage the head from a less centered position, which can affect comfort and movement.

Assessment looks at alignment from the side and observes how the head returns to position during simple movements. A clinician may also consider the cervical spine, shoulder position, and upper-back shape. Posture Correction focuses on the movement habits and alignment features that contribute to the pattern. The finding describes posture, not a diagnosis by itself.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess Forward Head Posture, we observe relaxed standing alignment and how the head, neck, and shoulders move together. Our team uses those observations to guide Posture Correction planning and to separate a positioning pattern from symptoms that may need further evaluation.

Forward Head Posture in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person who spends much of the workday looking down at a laptop may gradually hold the head ahead of the shoulders. During a Posture Correction visit, the clinician observes that position at rest and during gentle movement.
