What Is a Vertebra?

A vertebra is one of the individual bones that form the spinal column. Each vertebra has a central opening for the spinal cord and surfaces that connect with nearby vertebrae. Together, these bones support the body, protect nerve tissue, and allow controlled movement through the neck, back, and lower spine.

Key Takeaways About Vertebra

  • Each vertebra has a central opening for spinal cord protection.
  • Neighboring vertebrae connect through small joints and cushioning discs.
  • A vertebra is not the same as an intervertebral disc.

How Vertebra Works

A vertebra works as part of a linked series of spinal bones. Its main body bears load, while its rear projections and connecting surfaces guide movement. Openings in the vertebrae align to form a protected passage for the spinal cord. Nearby muscles and ligaments help control the position of each segment.

Vertebrae differ by region, so neck bones support different movements than lower-back bones. An intervertebral disc sits between many neighboring vertebrae and helps distribute pressure during activity. During a chiropractic adjustment, the practitioner considers the location of a vertebra, its relationship to nearby joints, and the person’s movement pattern. That assessment helps define the area being addressed without treating the bone as an isolated structure.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess a vertebra, we consider its spinal region, nearby joint motion, and the person’s reported symptoms. During a Chiropractic Adjustment, we use that information to identify the area of care and select an approach suited to the individual’s presentation.

Vertebra in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with limited neck movement may receive an assessment of the cervical vertebrae and nearby joints. The examination focuses on how those structures move together before a Chiropractic Adjustment is considered.
